Backpack Distribution Event
Thanks to the generosity of the Nina Baldwin Fisher Foundation and an anonymous donor, on August 19th more than 100 backpacks and school supplies were distributed to CASA families to kids from pre-school to high school. Kids chose their backpacks from the wide variety of colors. They, then, received a bag full of school supplies appropriate for their grade, such as paper, scissors, pens, and markers, plus hygiene supplies including a toothbrush and toothpaste.
“Why is this so important,” asks Melissa Protzek, CASA Executive Director. “Back-to-school time is so exciting for kids. It’s a fresh start and we want each of our kids to have a good school year and achieve their highest potential. For them to be successful in school, they need support from many people, and that includes us. A strong support system makes a big difference in their education.”
Board of Director’s members Mike Kirk, Jarene Barnes, Meredith Crimmins Hoffman and Soncerae Yeager joined staff members in distributing the backpacks, plus pizza and cupcakes. Participants also enjoyed an afternoon at the Pittsburgh Zoo, where the event took place.
“It was incredible to meet the families and see the smiles of the kids,” said Board Member Meredith Crimmins Hoffman. “It reminds me why we do what we do. It’s all about the kids.”
Said relative Tina P., “Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this always helps us when school is coming around. I’ve had the kids since they were babies and now they’re all growing up.”
