Year-End Giving Guide

Many families and individuals concentrate their charitable giving at year-end. If this includes you, here are some smart giving strategies that others have used to support charitable organizations important to them, including CASA.

  • Stocks that have appreciated in value are a win-win. You avoid the capital gains on the increase in value and CASA receives the full value of the stock.
  • QCDs (qualified charitable distributions) are more commonly known as charitable IRA rollovers. If you are over age 70.5, you can transfer funds in your IRA directly to CASA to meet your required withdrawal without increasing your taxable income as when you take the withdrawal yourself.
  • Donor Advised Funds (DAF) are monies you’ve already set aside for charitable purposes. All you do now is recommend a grant distribution to CASA of Allegheny County.
  • Cash and checks are also a common way to give at year-end. Checks must be dated and postmarked by December 31st, while credit card gifts must be completed by 11:59 pm on December 31.
